Ram Billet Steel Flywheels are an excellent factory replacement flywheel for those seeking to build a high performance or racing Mustang. Unlike a cast flywheel, Ram’s Billet Steel Flywheels aren’t at risk of exploding under high rpm in high performance applications. Ram CNC machines their flywheels from certified materials that exceed SFI specifications. Once machined, the flywheel is blanchard ground parallel to the crankshaft mounting surface. This ensures minimal runout and the optimal mating surface for the clutch disc.

Light vs. Heavy Flywheels

Your Mustang’s flywheel plays a pivotal role when launching or accelerating, storing more or less energy based on the weight of the flywheel itself. A heavy Billet Steel flywheel will store more inertial energy, ideal for Mustang’s that require more inertial energy to launch without bogging the engine. Use a heavier steel flywheel for heavier drag race cars, or for the best drivability for a street car.

A lighter Billet Aluminum flywheel will store less inertial energy, but will accelerate more quickly through gears. To make use of a Billet Aluminum flywheel, you’ll want to consider your Mustang’s weight, engine operating RPM, and your gearing. Too little gearing combined with a lighter flywheel can cause your engine to bog on launch.
